American Sign Language 1 - UC Approved

Course description: In this course, students will develop ASL (American Sign Language) receptive and expressive skills as well as conversational skills such as turn taking. Students will understand basic ASL linguistics and produce ASL sentences using correct grammatical features. Students will learn and use classifiers to support ASL structure. Students will also gain appreciation for and knowledge of the hearing impaired culture.

Course description: In this third year language course, students will increase and expand their recognition and production of ASL (American Sign Language) both receptively and expressively as well as produce ASL paragraphs using correct grammatical features. Students will also gain continued appreciation for and knowledge of the hearing impaired culture.
Spanish 1 – UC Approved
Grade level: 8th – 12th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: None
Course description: This first year language course will provide students the opportunity to develop a grasp of the Spanish language through practice in basic conversational skills and basic reading and writing exercises. It is the constant objective of Spanish I to give a solid base for later fluency in the language. Students acquire basic skills in listening, speaking, writing, and reading. They grasp essential grammar, concentrate on verb structure, and develop a Spanish vocabulary.
Spanish 2 - UC Approved
Grade level: 9h - 12th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Spanish 1
Course description: In this second year language course, students continue the acquisition process by listening, reading, and writing. They will become more fluent in their speaking ability. Grammar is studied more in depth and used in different activities in the tenses studied. Spanish 2 brings a greater awareness of geography and customs in Spanish-speaking countries. This course utilizes skits, DVDs, and other materials to bring the students to a closer understanding and communicating with Spanish speakers. Students will advance from the basic present tense patterns to more complex patterns, concepts, and become more creative in speaking and writing that will enable them to use the target language in the different tenses studied. Students will also increase in vocabulary while concentrating on pronunciation.
Spanish 2 Honors* - UC Approved
Grade level: 9h - 12th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: A- (89.75%) or higher in Spanish 1 and Foreign Language Department Head approval

Pre-requisite: Spanish 2 or Spanish 2 H
Course description: This third year language course covers more advanced structures in oral and written communication through the text, short, foreign newspapers, presentations, DVD´s, and the Bible. More attention is paid to syntax. Spanish 3 is for the motivated language learner student and provides a more in-depth review of all grammatical structures covered in Spanish 1 and Spanish 2. Emphasis is placed on oral communication and reading short stories, novelettes, and the bible.
Spanish 4 Honors* - UC Approved

Pre-requisite: A- (89.75%) or higher in Spanish 3 and Foreign Language Department Head approval
Course description: This fourth year language course continues to develop students’ grammatical and Spanish speaking skills through group discussions of daily events, essays on Spanish newspaper articles, short stories, tapes, presenting investigative information as a lecture to other students, and presenting the Four Spiritual Laws. The objective is to give the student the ability to talk to native speakers with ease, knowing what to say and knowing what is being said. Spanish/Spanish-American literature is investigated. Spanish history and customs are also investigated by students.
