English 7

Grade level: 7th grade (Two Semesters)

Pre-requisite: 6th grade grammar and Language Arts

Course description:
English 7 builds upon the knowledge gained in the elementary grades by exposing students to all aspects of language arts: writing, reading comprehension, literature, vocabulary, and grammar. English 7, in turn, prepares students for English 8. This course is designed to introduce students to the universal themes (fall semester) and genres (spring semester) of myths, fables, short stories, drama, non-fiction, and poetry; develop the ability to analyze literature; develop skill in word decoding and pronunciation; increase vocabulary; develop skills in written expression; and develop an appreciation for and enjoyment of reading.

 


 

English 8

Grade level: 8th grade (Two Semesters)

Pre-requisite: English 7

Course description:
The focus of 8th grade English is reading various types of literature based on theme and genre, reviewing grammar, expanding vocabulary and increasing writing skills. In addition to the literature anthology, students read several novels, poetry, and drama. Students analyze reading selections for plot, theme, and literary devices. Discussions of literature will develop critical thinking skills as well as enable the student to make biblical connections. In addition, students learn solid structure for various styles of writing, revising their own work to produce coherent sentences, cohesive paragraphs, and to incorporate correct grammar usage.
