Pre Algebra A
Grade level: 7th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Qualifying score on the math placement test
Course description: Pre-Algebra A is the first part of a two-year program that continues and expands practice on the four basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents and integers. In addition, it introduces the student to the skills and information needed to advance to Algebra I. Algebra is the basic language of mathematics. It is a branch of mathematics in which symbols, usually letters of the alphabet, represent numbers or members of a specified set. The Pre-Algebra A curriculum approaches these concepts at a slower pace than Pre-Algebra and strives to reinforce these difficult concepts before students advance into Algebra I.
Pre Algebra B
Grade level: 8th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Pre Algebra A and a qualifying score on the math placement test
Course description: Pre-Algebra B is the second part of a two-year program that continues and expands practice on the four basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents and integers. In addition, it introduces the student to the skills and information needed to advance to Algebra I. Algebra is the basic language of mathematics. It is a branch of mathematics in which symbols, usually letters of the alphabet, represent numbers or members of a specified set. The Pre-Algebra B curriculum approaches these concepts at a slower pace than Pre-Algebra and strives to reinforce these difficult concepts before students advance into Algebra I.
Pre Algebra
Grade level: 7th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Qualifying score on the math placement test
Course description: Pre-Algebra continues and expands practice on the four basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents and integers. In addition, it introduces the student to the skills and information needed to be successful in Algebra and higher mathematics, including variables and expressions, equations and their applications to problem solving, number theory, ration, proportions and percents, probability data analysis, the number line as applied to the coordinate plane, square roots and their application to right triangles, and the use of equations in algebraic and geometric application. This class moves at a faster pace than the Pre-Algebra A and B classes and is designed to prepare students to take Algebra I after one year. In addition, students are required to work in and solve problems that are at a higher level and require additional understanding and application than in Pre-Algebra A and B.
Algebra 1A – UC Approved
Grade level: 8th - 9th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Pre-Algebra A and B or Pre-Algebra and a qualifying score on the math placement test
Course description: Algebra IA is the first part of a two-year program that is a combination of systematic, step-by-step computations and logical thinking. Following a review of decimals, exponents, transformations, and the basic laws of mathematics, this course stresses the structure of Algebra and the computation of problem solving skills. The course covers increasingly complex equation, operations with polynomials and radicals, quadratic equations, and linear graphing. Word problems using these methods are introduced. This course attempts to introduce these topics slowly, over a two-year period, in order to achieve maximum understanding of these difficult topics.
Algebra 1B – UC Approved
Grade level: 8th - 9th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Pre-Algebra A and B, Pre-Algebra, or Algebra 1A and a qualifying score on the math placement test
Course description: Algebra IB is the second part of a two-year program that is a combination of systematic, step-by-step computations and logical thinking.
Algebra 1 – UC Approved
Grade level: 8th – 9th grade (Two Semesters)
Pre-requisite: Pre-Algebra A and B or Pre-Algebra and a qualifying score on the math placement test
Course description: Algebra I is a combination of systematic, step-by-step computations and logical thinking. This course is designed to progress at a much faster pace than Algebra I A/B. The curriculum stresses the computation of problem solving skills. The student is given the basic law of Algebra and is expected to apply logic to arrive at solutions. After a review of fundamental arithmetic, this course covers integers, properties involved in solving equations, solving equations in various forms, inequalities exponents, factoring polynomials, applying the quadratic formula, rational expressions, and graphing. In addition students are expected to work on and solve problems that are at a higher level and require additional understanding and application than Algebra I A and B.
